- As 2005 draws towards a close, we have tried to make
the content of the year's final edition of DIPLOMAT as
rich and varied as possible. Whether we have succeeded
is for you to decide.
-
- In our December interview, we talked to
Ambassador Rezaqul Haider of Bangladesh. Just a few
months into his stay in Ankara, he is determined to
enhance the friendly relations between his country
and Turkey, particularly in the economic field.
Ambassador Haider also refers to the role which his
country plays in international politics and the
contribution which it is making to peace operations.
He personally played an important role in East
Timor, and we believe the interview will make
interesting reading.
-
- Our 'Current Opinion' column this month is
contributed by Dr. Demir Fitrat Onger, a Frenchman
of Turkish origin and the founder of the Anatolian
Cultural Centre in Paris, which is striving hard to
introduce the culture of Turkey to French public
opinion. Cardiologist Onger is no stranger to
politics, and frequently takes an active role in
political activities in France, especially when it
comes to European Union affairs.
-
- China is the destination for our travel pages.
It is a country that cannot easily be discussed in a
few pages. In the belief that a picture paints a
thousand words, we have given pride of place to
photographs.
-
- Turning to the arts,, we feature one of the
greatest painters Turkey has produced: Nuri İyem,
who passed away earlier this year. By introducing
our readers to İyem, we also commemorate his life
and work.
-
- Turkey's Ministry of Foreign Affairs is known
for the backing which it gives to activities in many
different fields, in addition to managing the
country's foreign policy. The most recent example of
this is the "Style and Status" exhibition currently
under way in Washington. The exhibition focuses on
Ottoman garments and textiles products. The
consultancy support Sent by the Ministry lies at the
root of its success. Impressions and images from the
exhibition are to be found within these pages.
-
- On a seasonal note,, we have also turned our
attention to the numerous contrasting ski centres
which dot the map of Turkey. The resulting article
may give you some ideas of how to spend the coming
holidays.
-
- See you in 2006...
